The works of 12 participating artists explore the tensions inherent in various forms of the gaze, from the deceptively benign space that digital existence implies to more visible voyeuristic systems. Through 001’s performance, sound, video, sculptural, and multimedia works, viewers are invited to actively interrogate the tension between structures of surveillance that range from the silently implied to the visually oppressive.

The artificial, time-bound community created by the event itself places participants in a space dedicated to experiencing the acts of watching and being keenly aware of being watched. Through viewing different representations of the fractured, flattened, omnipresent nature of surveillance in real time, impressions of freedom and agency shift and morph. Oscillating between weaponized notions of safety and a dissolving sense of self, the public space becomes one of self-monitoring and reflection. Bodies occupying the space, their movements, and the digital footprints left behind are also transformed, visually represented through glitch, glow, commodification, and the feed. The gaze turns in on itself, allowing viewers to actively locate themselves in a complex web of distorted realities.

Through bringing intentionality and awareness to our oftentimes overlooked status of hyper-connectivity, 001 allows for not only interrogation but creative play within the space of the overly digitalized and constantly surveilled.
